The first annual Sioux Lookout International Tree Hugging Championship, held at Cedar Bay on August 9, 2025, was an unforgettable event that blended humor, creativity, and a deep affection for nature. Participants and spectators gathered to celebrate their love for trees while also engaging in friendly competition. From children to adults, everyone joined in on the fun, and the day was filled with laughter and a sense of belonging.

The Lakeshore Committee of the Friends of Cedar Bay welcomed everyone with open arms. Contestants eagerly participated in various engaging competitions, including the most trees hugged in one minute, the longest hug with feet off the ground, and the most creative tree hug. These contests promoted both spirit and skill, reflecting the participants' passion for trees while encouraging unique expressions of that love.

The atmosphere pulsed with energy as competitors prepared to test their abilities. The race for the most trees hugged in one minute saw individuals racing against the clock, with some managing to hug as many as ten trees, showcasing impressive agility and speed. The crowd erupted in laughter when a few participants playfully fell over while going for their third or fourth tree. The sheer joy and encouragement among competitors highlighted the event's primary goal: to create connections and celebrate nature.

Another entertaining contest involved participants trying to maintain the longest hug with their feet off the ground. It wasn't merely a test of strength but also balance and creativity. Some competitors clung on for over 30 seconds, drawing gasps and cheers from the audience. Their determination was inspiring, and shared moments of support created a warm atmosphere throughout the event.

Creativity took center stage during the most creative tree hug contest. Participants embraced their trees in imaginative ways and striking playful poses. The judges had a challenging task, as each unique entry brought personality and flair, making the decision for winners tough.

Looking forward, the Lakeshore Committee is already hard at work planning the second annual Sioux Lookout International Tree Hugging Championship. Feedback from this year's participants will play a crucial role in expanding the event. With the community's eagerness and strong support, next year promises to be even bigger and better.

Reflecting on the first annual Sioux Lookout International Tree Hugging Championship, it was a triumphant celebration filled with laughter, creativity, and a shared passion for our natural world. This event not only highlighted the beauty of trees but also succeeded in building a sense of community among participants. As plans for next year take shape, one thing is clear: the love for tree hugging will continue to flourish in Sioux Lookout!
