Cedar Bay Stables
The Stables at Cedar Bay is a co-operative operating under the non-profit organization Friends of Cedar Bay. After a period of closure, the stables reopened in December 2006 through a partnership with the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. Our focus is to provide recreational and educational opportunities for people of all ages in Sioux Lookout and the surrounding area.
Programs & Offerings
Horse Leasing
Leasing is offered following a competency assessment and horse–rider match. Includes tack as approved and arena/trail access when conditions allow.

Options: Full (6x/week) or Part (3x/week).

Co‑op model: reduced rate with chores; standard rate without chores.

Current monthly rates: With chores, Part: $125; Full: $250. Without chores, Part: $225; Full: $350. At this time, we are only offering memberships with chores.

Not included: lessons, farrier/vet, shows, consumables.

Safety: ASTM/SEI helmet required when mounted; follow barn rules at all times.

Riding Lessons
Private or small‑group lessons operate seasonally. Instruction covers horsemanship, grooming, tack, arena basics, and safe trail preparation.

Levels: beginner to intermediate; youth and adult.

Requirements: helmet (ASTM/SEI), long pants, boots with a heel; arrive 10 minutes early.

Supervision: riders under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Scheduling & fees: posted seasonally; weather and volunteer availability may affect times.

Friends of Cedar Bay is happy to support the independent instructors providing this service at Cedar Bay by advertising on their behalf.
Program availability
Lesson schedules and leasing slots vary by season, horse availability, and volunteers. Sleigh and wagon rides are currently paused.
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a ground-based educational program where participants work with horses to build valuable life skills in a fun, hands-on environment.
Through guided exercises, participants develop confidence, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and self-awareness. Horses are naturally sensitive and responsive, making them powerful partners in helping people understand how their actions, energy, and communication affect others.
This is not a riding program. All activities take place on the ground.

Barn & Horse Etiquette
Help keep horses, riders and visitors safe — thank you for being kind around the barn.
Safety first
Stay outside paddocks unless invited by staff. Move calmly and speak softly around horses.
Dogs on leash
For everyone’s safety, keep dogs leashed and away from working horses.
Please don’t feed horses
Treats can cause health issues and nipping. Ask a volunteer before offering anything.
Follow signs
Observe posted routes and any temporary closures due to weather or maintenance.
Respect programs
Give space to lessons; wait for instructions before approaching a horse.
Helmets strongly recommended
Bring a properly‑fitted riding helmet for mounted activities. Loaner availability may vary.
