Owl Prowl

Each year in early spring, Cedar Bay hosts an Owl Prowl. Late one evening, participants gather at the Stables parking lot dressed in warm clothes and rubber boots, ready for a quiet muddy walk in the dark.

Led by a volunteer birder, the group walks quietly toward the shores of Cedar Bay. We listen for the calls of owls that live in our area, including barred owls, boreal owls, and great grey owls. Sometimes we even try to coax them to call back by playing owl calls on a portable speaker.

The Owl Prowl was led for many years by the late Monika Orzechowski, a passionate environmentalist, expert birder, and strong supporter of Cedar Bay. We continue this tradition in her spirit.

Some years we hear owls, and some years we don’t—but it is always a beautiful time to be out in the bush at night. After the walk, everyone is welcomed back with hot chocolate and good company.
